linsey laidlaw living room

A few weeks back, my friend Joanna posted a tour of our Brooklyn apartment on her blog. This apartment has wonky electricity (mind which socket you vacuum from or the whole house will go dark), the teeeeensiest bathroom, is normally blanketed in legos/Thomas tracks/construction paper scraps, and has been known to have an unwelcome mouse visitor from time-to-time. It is small. There is no laundry, no parking, no outdoor space, and not even a real dishwasher. But I love our home so much—I brought two of my babies home from the hospital to this place, have hosted so many fun parties crammed with beloved friends, and have created one hundred billion happy memories within these chipped-paint walls. And for all its faults, I will cry buckets of tears if/when we ever leave—it is the place my kids were little. (Though Brian has big plans for triple bunks that could get us through the teenage years!) I’m so glad the amazing Alpha captured this space so we can look back fondly years down the road. See more here if you like.

We’ve had to learn to bend carefully, but there were definitely a few whacks as we got used to it! Haha.

Hi! I’m absolutely smitten with your kids room! We have 2 boys (ages 4 and 1 and a half) and a 3rd on the way. Can you share some more about this bed situation? Is this a custom bed? Is the top bunk a full single size? When and how did you move the two older kids into the same room? When did the baby join? Anyway, I’m just looking for all the info I can get on the subject, and this little room is just so beautiful! Thanks!!

Hi Martha! Congrats on your new baby! The beds are semi custom—the top bunk is a single loft bed, the bottom is a custom built toddler-ish size with storage built underneath. We’ve always added the babies to the mix at 5-6 months—older siblings get to have “sleepovers” in mom and dad’s room while new baby adjusts/sleep trains for a few nights and then it usually took us a week more or less to get everyone used to the situation (with plenty of coaching and encouragement!) Good luck! xo

I love the loft style bed with the custom bed underneath! This is amazing and I need to do this for our house. We have three kids – 5, 2, & 8 mos. this would be ideal for them! Did you have to have a custom mattress made? Or do they make small mattresses that size? Or do you have a diy that you would like to share?

Hi Mary! I just got a thick piece of twin memory foam from Amazon and sliced the extra off the bottom with a kitchen knife! We just keep the mattress protector and sheets tucked tightly under.
